Description: The following article documents the background to the committal of ‘Jane King’, an Aboriginal domestic worker in Sydney, New South Wales, to a mental asylum in 1942. My reconstruction of events surrounding this specific story is intended to highlight the significance of the domestic service site as the locale for a removal policy aimed not at the ‘assimilation’ of Aboriginal women into mainstream Australian society, as is often assumed, but rather at their containment, incarceration, and consignment to oblivion.
